Chase Covers
At the top of your chimney or "chase" is the horizontal flat are known as the crown. On a masonry fireplace the crown is typically made out of a thin mortar bed. Over time the crown will develop cracks and become porous. Once this occurs, water will run into the cracks and make it's way down into the hollow areas of the chase. This excess moisture can cause extensive damage to your brickwork, allow mold, algae, moss, and liken to grow in and around the chase as well as cause the brick to de laminate which is known as spalling. We can correct this issue by installation of a new metal chase cover, or application of a new crown repair membrane. Our products are locally sourced and our work comes backed by a warranty. This is a good example of a cracked and leaking crown. In this photo you can see numerous horizontal and vertical cracks. Every time it rains, water runs through those cracks and into the chimney chase.
You can also see that along the edge, the mortar crown is not firmly attached to the brickwork. This lets water run in horizontally underneath the crown. This crown is no longer serving it's intended function.
Water intrusion is the number one cause of failed and inoperable chimney systems. A chase cover or crown repair membrane is an excellent economical way to stop the moisture intrusion and chimney deterioration.
